Open-Kitchen’s Observations
Usually I order a la carte for lunch at the new but not-so-recently opened cafeteria. Noticed today that the cook keeps on tasting whatever it is that he is cooking. The thing is, he’s cooking endlessly. Just imagine that he has to cook up 1000x, so it must amounts to 1000 spoonful isn’t it? He must be stomach-full at the end of the day…My point is, he’s not an experience chef yet – who just campak2 or agak2 je..The taste? So-and-so la but better than the restaurant downstairs at my place…
While waiting for the nasi goreng kampong, I waited infront of the roti canai griddle. The pokcik is very nice – smiling at all times so we chatted properly this time. Obviously (only to me), he looked like an Indonesian so I interspersed my talk with their lingo like kamu, bangat, udah etc… By then, it came to my inquisitive mind, “Eh, kat Indonesia ada roti canai tak?” Apatah dia jawab, I don’t quite catch his answer but something like he has been ‘tebar’ing roti canai for so long already, pernah bukak kantin etc.etc. He asked me where do I live (I know2x, cannot tell stranger my place but he’s old guy la!). Then I asked him….he said, “Saya sebenarnya orang Melaka…” Alamak! Malunya...pandai2 je assume dia Pak Indo.
So, it’s true la –don’t judge a book by its’ cover or in this case, don’t simply assume or generalize – ask first!

Cooling Period (sometime long ago, during the Great Year-End Sale)
9am- The other day, I accompanied a friend shopping for that little black h-bag (equivalent to LBD la) – a ‘nice looking’ handbag for that occasional functions/dinners that we have to attend from time to time properly dressed up. The aim is clear, the budget isn’t so – she brought both cash & credit card but she also have some other things to buy later.
12pm- After making our way around the goods on offer on the whole floor (that lasted for 2 hours), she was down to the final 2 choices – a Bonia at the price of RM289 after discount; against a Carlo Rino at only the a third of the Bonia price, RM107 after 40% discount. She asked my opinion (that’s why I was there actually) and I told her, “If it was me (cheapskate-homo-economicus-me!) & my money, RM300 is way too much for a little bag!!” But-but, the higher price was more than compensated by the fact the leather was so soft & supple, the design is new (& can be seen as evergreen in future), the pleated handle can be adjusted, blahblah…both of us are already in love with that one! Being the ‘slightly’ more mature of the two, I decided that an important cooling period was needed in order for us to come to the final decision.
So, we went upstairs and shopped for other things. Later, went out of Sogo and had our lunch. This is followed by a round of cari-tudung where we need to check out every stall that there is to find the perfect one (couldn’t blame her coz I’m like that too!). Solat at Masjid India. After that, more shopping before we walked back towards Sogo for that final moment. Before we went in again, we had what business people usually called as a brain storming session (kat tembok luar) where we both argued the pros & cons of buying that particular Bonia h-bag. Well, it was obvious by now that what we’re doing is simply trying to justify her decision in buying that bag. Like, “If you buy that one - means no need to buy another h-bag for the next 5 years! Good value for money lor! Blahblah…”
3pm - So, we zoomed straight to the corner where we had checked out the bag earlier in the morning. But, where is it? Ya Tuhan! “Excuse me Dik, where is the little bag there- earlier in the morning…” “Oh…we just sold that one la kak!” “Don’t you have another one in stock?” No. “At another outlet perhaps?” Not sure…..We’re dumbfound – it never came across to my mind that someone else might be interested in that bag! Er…hello – you’re not alone in this big, mad, shopping-crazed haven! (Later, some kind soul told me that we should have try KLCC next –got Bonia boutique there! Duh!)
Gosh, we better rushed to the other one before it sold out too…
There it is! “I’ll have this one here.” The sales girl took out a new one from the store – See, usually they have more than one copy of each design.
Sorry my dear – next time, if you see anything that grab your fancy, just take it fast! Forget about cooling period & making better decision. Coz we were both feeling so frustrated at the end of the day! (But-but… I got myself a consolation price – a h-bag for moi lor..)
5pm- On top of that experience, we also had the ‘wrong commuter train’ (too busy commiserating over the lost ‘bag’) & thus delayed our journey home by about half an hour.
